Living in Community with God
This week has been wonderful, although some things did not go as planned! On Monday five of us went to the mountains of Las Pitas to do surveys, but on the way up the mountain the car broke down. We ended up being stranded in the mountains, for what we thought would only be a few hours and turned into about 8. The fact that things didn’t go as planned resulted in 5 people playing different sports while improvising the materials. From baseball with a stick and rock, bowling with rocks down a hill, and playing Mafia with four people we kept ourselves busy. Through all of that it made me realize how blessed I am to be with a group of people, specifically my fellow interns, that are so special. Although we were bummed we didn’t get to do the surveys we were able to get to know one another better and enjoy each other’s company. I felt a sense of community and it really made me take a step back and realize not only how important the things are that you do throughout your life are, but also how important the relationships are that you build. Having been here for three weeks, we as interns are continually getting to know each other better and I am daily encouraged by each of them. I couldn’t imagine a better group of peers to be surrounded by as I experience the journey of this summer internship. From my going local experience a few weeks ago and being around the Hondurans I have seen and felt a sense of community unlike anything else. They all live so close to family members and spend time with one another everyday going from house to house. Everyone knows everyone on a personal basis it seems. I love that about the communities and people here; it is so refreshing compared to what community looks like back in the states. This week I have been focusing on the aspect of community and what a God centered community looks like. I have seen it here and am a part of it. Living in community and witnessing strong communities of Hondurans who take time everyday to spend time with one another has been so encouraging to me. It is something I want to experience more of. From living with the group of Mission Lazarus interns and seeing local Honduran communities it is evident that living in a God centered community makes life all the more beautiful. -Rebekah Singleton
