This week has been really cool. I started off in the CIDT in Limon on Monday and it was an experience. While Honduras offers free education to children until 6th grade they must provide their own uniforms and books. For a lot of these families this is an impossible expense. This is where Mission Lazarus steps in and helps out by providing education for the kids that get left out of the system. These are the poorest of the poor and without help would be left out on the street.
The woman who runs it is named Digna, and is aptly known as “Big Momma”. She has been one of the most inspiring people I have met since I have been down here. She goes in day in and day out knowing that the kids she’s trying to teach come from some of the harshest home environments you can imagine. With tears in her eyes, she hugs each of her students as they leave for the day knowing that there is a possibilty they wont return tomorrow.
However, Digna keeps going. She keeps coming back, even though the odds are against her and her students, she dosen’t quit. Why? Because love does. Love says that those kids are worth fighting for. In his book Love Does, Bob Goff says, ”Love doesn’t just think about good things, or agree with them, or talk about them. Love just does.” I believe Digna lives this out everyday of her life. Not just talking about helping her community but actually doing it. It is people like her that change the world, because I know she has changed mine.
